K.H. Mahoney
K.H. Mahoney’s work is primarily conceptual with elements of abstraction and sculpture incorporated into it. Her goal is to create an abstract canvas using oil sticks and acrylic paint, combining two opposite elements to create an expanse of color and texture. The finished paintings are focused on color, stroke, and texture as well as using squares of metal mesh, found objects, and weaving of bands of cloth into a minimalist grid. This combination of expressionism banded by minimal space is an experimentation that turns abstract work into something more conceptual without losing the initial feelings. It is also proof that it is more difficult to communicate these ideas in a small space.
She is inspired by Rothko, DeKooning, Monet and Degas as well as her son, her students, nature and every day surroundings.
She received a BFA from Savannah College of Art & Design, an MA from Long Island University, and an MFA from Pratt Institute. She has been showing professionally with solo and group shows since 1993, principally in the New York metropolitan area but also in Canada, Spain and Belgium. Her first award occurred in 1985, while still a young student.
Her work has been reviewed by The New York Times and Antiques & The Arts Weekly as well as other publications.
